Does Therapy Work?

The short answer is Yes therapy does work!  The long answer is that how well it works depends on a couple of factors including:

  •  How open and patient you feel you can be to the process, as not every problem has a “quick fix” solution

  •  How comfortable you feel with your therapist- problems can’t be resolved if you don’t feel comfortable and safe to share them, so making sure your therapist is the good fit for you is crucial for therapy to work.

How Long is a Session?

A typical session last 50 minutes.  However longer sessions can be arranged to accommodate specific needs.

What is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy is a space for individuals or couples to address issues of communication, desire, compatibility, exploration, dysfunction, trauma, and/or sexual health that may be standing in the way of the meaningful and pleasurable sexual relationships they desire.  It does not involve any physical touch, it is simply talk therapy.

I’m having personal problems but they’re affecting my relationship.  Should I do individual or couples therapy?

This depends on the nature of the personal problem and how it is affecting your relationship.  Give me a call.  We’ll talk about what’s been going on for you, and which type of therapy would best meet your needs.

We haven’t been together that long, is it too soon to be doing couples therapy?

Couples often think that their relationships must be close to destruction before they start couple’s therapy, but this simply isn’t true.  It’s never too early to start couple’s therapy, as it can be a great tool to help you build your relationship, and work  through differences as they arise. Many couples like to utilize couples therapy as they enter new phases of their relationship (moving in together, getting married, starting a family) to process how the new phase might shift their relationship dynamic.  Couples therapy can also be used as a relationship check-up when things are going well and you want to make sure they continue to head in that direction.

Can I Use My Insurance to Pay for Therapy?

I currently do not accept insurance. Though I am in the process of credentialing with Aetna, BCBS, Cigna, and United HealthCare. However, if you would like to utilize your insurance plan now, I can provide you with documentation to submit to your insurance company for “out of network” reimbursement.  You will want to touch base with your insurance company first to find out exactly what your out of network benefits are and how much they will reimburse you. I am also an In Network Provider for Penn Behavioral Health so I can accept your insurance copay if you are eligible for those benefits.  In addition I offer a sliding scale based on income and financial circumstances. Please see Fees & Insurance for more details.

What questions should I ask my insurance provider About my BENEFITS and to find out if I have Out of Network Benefits?

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?

  • Do I have Out of Network insurance benefits, and if so what is the reimbursement rate?

  • What is my deductible and has it been met?

  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?

  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?
